We often make banana bread, and you can find a variety of banana desserts on our blog. However, banana bread is the recipe we prepare most frequently. It’s easy to make and doesn't require much effort, using ingredients that you probably already have in your pantry or fridge. The kids (and I, too) love adding chocolate chips, as they bring a delightful sweetness and enhance the texture, which is really enjoyable. You can easily make banana bread in advance and store it in the fridge or freezer. We usually slice it, place the slices in a zip-top freezer bag, and store it in the freezer. When we want a slice, we simply take one out and reheat it in the microwave. It's incredibly convenient! Additionally, you can always stir in a tablespoon of your favorite creamy peanut butter for an extra burst of flavor.

How to make Chocolate Chip Banana Bread at home

This is a fuss-free recipe that you can make in no time. It's a great way to use ripe bananas. However, if you don't have them at home, you can ripen them in your oven. Wrap them in aluminum foil and place them in the oven for 10 - 15 minutes at 210 °C / 410 °F. 

  1. Preheat the oven so that it is ready for your banana bread.
  2. Using a fork, mash the bananas and butter together.
  3. Alternate adding the flour mixture and the banana mixture to the egg mixture until you get a smooth batter—don't forget the chocolate chips.
  4. Pour the banana bread batter into the prepared loaf. To make it prettier, add an additional banana.
  5. Bake, cool, slice, and devour.

Storing and freezing

Store your Chocolate Chip Banana Bread at room temperature, in a fridge, or freeze it. 

Tightly wrap your baked and cooled banana bread in cling film to prevent it from drying out. Store at room temperature or in a fridge for up to 3 days.

You can easily freeze banana bread too. Place it in a freezer bag or an airtight container. Store in the freezer for up to a month. Before freezing, make sure that your banana bread is completely cooled, then cut in individual slices to have it ready or freeze the whole loaf. Before serving, defrost by placing on the kitchen counter or microwave them in intervals for a couple of seconds.

METHOD

  • prepare the mixture

    Place a rack in the middle of the oven and preheat the oven to 190 °C / 375 °F. Add the bananas to a bowl and add melted butter. Using a fork, mash into a smooth mixture. Add all-purpose flour, pinch of salt, and baking powder to a separate bowl and stir to combine. In a large bowl, beat together the eggs, sugar, and honey. While continually beating, start alternating the flour and banana mixture until well combined and smooth. Lastly, using a spatula, stir in the chocolate chips.

    Line a bread or loaf pan (10cm x 20cm or 4x8 inch) with parchment paper. Remember to line the sides of the pan so that there's an overhang on the two long sides. Pour the banana bread mixture into the prepared pan. Optionally, cut an additional peeled banana lengthwise and place it on top of the batter, cut-side up. Place in the preheated oven on the middle rack and bake for 45 - 50 minutes at 190 °C or 375 °F.

    Take the banana bread from the oven. Carefully lift the longer sheets of paper and the banana bread and place them on the rack. Cool to room temperature, then cut into slices and serve from breakfast, snack, or dessert.
